are you working on your thanksgiving grocery list yet?
i'm about to start mine. top of the list: chives
thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.
back in mid-october, i asked (ok, made) my husband to help me decide what would be on our menu. i want to share what’s on our menu, but i REALLY wanna know what’s on yours! and, i want to share some other recipes for when you’re hosting family… some might call it running a restaurant for a few days.
what to feed family around thanksgiving
morning glory baked oats (bon appetit)
these are perfectly spiced with lots of fiber to keep you full and eating healthy-ish before the big day. easily doubled for a crowd!
yields 6-8 servings
sesame chicken with cashews and dates (melissa clark’s dinner cookbook)
crunchy, roasty, toasty, chewy, savory. this is the perfect night-before-thanksgiving food IMO. (i have cooked it for my family on the night before thanksgiving to great acclaim) make it easy by buying some microwaveable rice and steamed broccoli to go alongside!

crispy gnocchi with sausage and broccoli (NYT gift link)
ali slagle does it again. if you’re feeling very how-am-i-supposed-to-cook-any-other-meal-than-thanksgiving, put this on your meal plan. it’s a well-rounded dinner — protein, carb, and fiber — with mega flavor and minimal effort. my favorite kind. if you wanna bump it up a notch, i’d serve on top of arugula with a simple garlic yogurt sauce (plain yogurt, grated garlic, salt and pepper) on the side.

our menu
we’ll be celebrating with some friends who are like family; and, i just freaking love thanksgiving and can’t help myself from making way too much!
sour cream and chive parker house rolls
claire saffitz made me do it.
pecan pie
i’m gonna try clare’s version this year! i’ll report back.
deviled eggs
my MIL’s recipe: eggs, yellow mustard, mayo, salt, pepper. all to taste. sprinkled with paprika before serving.
squash casserole
my grandmother’s recipe — browned sausage mixed with cooked yellow squash and sour cream. topped with sourdough breadcrumbs and melted cheddar. exactly what you think southern grandmas make at thanksgiving.
green bean casserole
my friend holly gave this smitten kitchen recipe the highest praise: it’s not thanksgiving without this on her table. say less! i’ve never been convinced to make something so quickly.
sweet potato soufflé
my aunt donna’s recipe. the only one for me. sweet potatoes are lightened up with whipped egg whites then sweetened with a brown sugar pecan topping. bury me on a pile of this soufflé, ok?
